International Truck and Engine Corporation has a long and distinguished history in Chatham dating back to 1922.
All of us have either worked, had a family member or friend work for this icon in our community. We have all been touched one way or another by this company.
As a community we are proud of the accomplishments made through the years. The quality and expertise of International Trucks are legendary in the trucking industry and each one of you share in that pride.
But we have had some anxious moments in the past. In 2002 and 2003, there was a real possibility of plant closure. What we witnessed then was a tremendous effort by the company, Labour, and government to help assure that International Trucks would continue to be built right here in Chatham by a committed company and proud workers.
Labour made concessions, the federal and provincial governments delivered approximately $64 million dollars – and International Truck & Engine Corporation invested $135 million to insure a strong and healthy future for years to come.
Today we are witnessing the fruit of all that hard work. The International ProStar is more that just a new truck. This launch symbolizes what can be done when Labour, management, government and community form a partnership for the good of all.
I want to congratulate all of you today for your remarkable achievements. I know I can speak for all our community for the heartfelt gratitude each of us has for your dedication and hard work.
It is my privilege as your Member of Parliament along with the Government of Canada and our Prime Minister Stephen Harper to offer each of you my sincere congratulations.
